Hidden (sme) Champions: the Role of Innovation and Strategy

The paper begins by describing Hermann Simon’s concept of Hidden Champions. Essentially hidden champions are SMEs who have a dominant position in a narrow global market. A model is developed emphasizing the special role of innovation and strategy in achieving such a dominant global position. The model will then be validated using Canadian SME cases. Implications are drawn as to how other SMEs can use the identified success factors, particularly their application of innovation and strategy. Please note that the definition of "champion" in this paper differs from that used in the entrepreneurship literature, namely as an internal champion of change.
